THE DETROIT ZOO June 2010 again

Detroit Zoo Water Tower Receives Makeover ROYAL OAK, Mich., June 21, 2010
One of the most visible landmarks in the region  – the iconic water tower at Woodward Avenue and 10 Mile
Road emblazoned with the Detroit Zoo logo – is receiving a facelift starting today.

The month-long project will include steaming off the existing graphic, then power washing, scraping, priming
and hand-painting the  150-foot-tall structure.   Next, a 40-foot by 270-foot wraparound graphic, made of
a 3M pressure-sensitive adhesive vinyl, will be applied.  The tower will feature the Detroit Zoo’s “critter parade”
logo depicting animals and humans walking across a plain at dusk.

H2O Towers will provide the cleaning and prep, and Graphic Link LLC will create and install the graphic.
The $200,000 makeover is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting.

The 1.5-million-gallon tower was constructed by the City of Royal Oak in 1928 to provide adequate water
pressure for the north Woodward-area water system, whose service area included the Detroit Zoo.  The
water tank performed that function until 1984, when it was shut down due to a defective valve.  It has since
served as a giant billboard pinpointing the Zoo’s location.
